Restore My Files - Product Review

Restore My Files is one of thirteen file recovery programs that we evaluated, and it's one that we definitely felt worthy of recommendation. As with any other undeletion program, Restore My Files recovers documents and programs that can't be retrieved from the Recycle Bin, or that have been 'permanently' deleted by the all too familiar Windows Shift-Delete key combination. Some software is programmed to bypass this bin and will conveniently permanently delete files without warning. But deleting a massive collection of files will also bypass the Recycle Bin and send the whole lot to permanent deletion as well.

The thing about 'permanent deletion' is that computers don't truly delete files. They instead, move deleted files to a part of an unused disk reserved for storage. Programs like Restore My Files attempt to retrieve files from that part of a hard drive and they reconstruct as much of them as they can. Most deleted files are overwritten -- making usability difficult to impossible. A good undeletion program however, will attempt to salvage overwritten files to maybe 60 - 100% usability. Restore My Files is an example of such a program.

We did not find any problems with this program's test drive. Our use of it went as smoothly as expected largely due to the fact that it comes with all the standard undeletion software amenities. Restore My Files recovers files from IDE / ATA / SATA / SCSI hard disk drives, removable devices (SmartMedia, Secure Digital, MemorySticks, etc.), and internal and external ZIP drives and USB Hard drives. FAT, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, NTFS5 , NTFS + EFS file systems are supported and the program works on Windows 98 / ME / Windows XP / 2003 Server / Vista operating Systems.

It also supports basic and dynamic Volume drives, local or network drives, compressed, fragmented and encrypted files on NTFS, and localized and long filenames. File and disk size does not appear to be an issue, as the program can recover files too big for the Recycle Bin and it can work on hard drives larger than 8 GB.

One thing about Restore My Files is that it WILL work around bad-sector disk areas and recovers data where other programs fail. It also implements the entire process with a hands-off approach -- meaning that it doesn't write or make any changes to the hard drive while its working.

Download Restore My Files and give it a test drive of your own.
