The Windows Registry - What You Need To Know

Wlindows Registry Product CapabilitiesThe Windows registry is a section of your computer that stores settings, options, and preferences. When you use software, you may change the size of the software's window, the color of the window's GUI (graphical user interface), or the default font of that software's text. These changes, accessible through the software's options, are often saved to the Windows registry so that each time that you start the software, your changes remain the same and you don't need to make them again.

Being rather complicated, the Window's registry stores all sorts of information about your computer and every software program that's installed on it. That's why when you start your computer, it takes a while for Windows to load -- your computer first reads everything in the registry and then second, sets up everything according to your options. Programs that have not been changed through its options are set up according to their default settings -- that is, default settings that were determined by the programmer that built them.

Of course software settings aren't the only settings that the registry stores. It also stores information about your hardware. In a way, the Windows registry is a sort of director that tells your computer when, where, and how to use each of its parts.

If you were to set an option in the Window's registry yourself, you would find yourself looking at a bunch of Geeky code that just wouldn't make sense at all. That's why we use the Control Panel and other utility software and tools to set our options. Every change that we make in the user-friendly Control Panel is written and saved to the cryptic Windows registry. In fact, if you were to fiddle around with the registry without knowing what you were doing, you could inadvertently set a function that could prevent your computer from properly working. That's why you see so many warnings about changing your registry settings -- even some of the most savvy programmers won't touch that thing!

What's The Big Deal About The Registry?

Well just because most of us tend to shy away from the registry -- that doesn't mean that everyone does. We trust ethical programmers to write their software settings to our computer's registry without problem. Unfortunately, the people who write viruses, adware, and spyware write their software settings to our computer's registry too and that's what makes their malicious programs so hard to remove. It's also what makes these kinds of programs wreak the havoc that they do.

Since much of the damage that these programs cause comes straight from the registry settings that they've created, it's imperative that we arm ourselves with some good registry back-up and restore software. Registry back-up and restore software will first, copy our registry settings to a file that can be saved onto a floppy for safe-keeping (for something so important, registry files are pretty tiny). Then it will restore our settings back to the way they were before they were changed by malware (viruses, adware, and spyware).

It's unfortunate, but backing up the registry is one of the last things that we think of when we talk about computer maintenance. Many people are content with running "de-frag" or "scan disk," when there's so much more we can do. After all, a computer that has been hit by a virus but cleaned and restored is about as useful as vanilla PC!
