OpenOffice - Product Review

Like thousands of others, you too may be thinking about switching from Microsoft to OpenOffice. If you peer into any working environment, you'll find the Microsoft Office suite installed onto just about every computer across America (if not world wide). If the software weren't so expensive, it probably wouldn't be the problem that it has become today. Hundreds of people complain about Microsoft's cost and even more expensive upgrades. But even more have opted to use an alternative that not only solves the problem of cost, it also solve the problem of compatibility.

OpenOffice is THE alternative to Microsoft Office and it sells at a quarter of what Microsoft costs. The standard version of MS Office might sell for around $399 while OpenOffice can be had for a mere $47 dollars. What's even better is OpenOffice's compatibility. OpenOffice can read and write Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Microsoft Office files. OpenOffice can also read and write files usually generated by the WordPerfect Office Suite: WordPerfect, Quattro Pro, Paradox, and Presentations.

It's always a little nerve wracking to switch from such a widely used program base, but OpenOffice makes it easy. It has it's own word processor which is of course comparable to Microsoft Word. It has its own spreadsheet program comparable to Microsoft's Excel. It has its own presentation program comparable to Microsoft's PowerPoint. And it has its own Database comparable to Microsoft's Access. This portability of course makes communication even more accessible to anyone world-wide. An OpenOffice accountant can work with data stored in Excel for example. And a OpenOffice database programmer can work with information stored inside an Access database.

Unlike Microsoft Office's suite however, OpenOffice comes with its own anti virus program, advanced calculator, PDF creator, and diagram creator. This, and the fact that OpenOffice is open source, extends the use of the typical office suite into something much larger than we could have ever expected.

Being open source, we can modify the way that OpenOffice works and we can freely share that modification with others. All you need is a little programming knowledge to tweak any one of OpenOffice's eight programs to your liking. And should you develop something that works for a lot of situations, you can distribute your modifications from your own web site -- properly credited of course.

If compatibility is a concern, you'll fare well by downloading OpenOffice today.
