Well it's confirmed and it's inevitable. There's just not a single one of us that's immune to losing computer files. Fortunately we have programs that will recover them. As you know, we put a couple of these programs to test -- Recover Lost Files being one of them.
Recover Lost Files recovers documents and programs that can't be retrieved from the Recycle Bin, or that have been 'permanently' deleted by the infamous three-finger combination (Windows Shift-Delete). Some software is programmed to bypass this bin, while deleting a massive collection of files will bypass the Recycle Bin altogether. Deleting a large selection of files will send the whole lot to binary heaven as well.
Although the situation appears irrevocable, it really isn't. Windows can't retrieve a 'permanently' deleted file, but that doesn't mean the file doesn't exist... somewhere. The truth is that computers don't really delete files. What they do instead, is move them to a part of an unused disk. No matter how much we stuff our hard drives, there's always space for deleted file storage. Programs like Recover Lost Files attempt to retrieve file from that area of a hard drive. But it isn't easy.
Deleted files are often overwritten.
When we tried Recover Lost Files, we wanted to see how much of a deleted file remained intact. In other words, we wanted to see how much of a file compared to its original, undeleted form. Since we already know newly deleted files are pretty much intact, we opted to recover files that were deleted a long time ago.
We were rather surprised at how much this program actually retrieved. Results weren't 100% (no deletion program is), but when we looked at the contents of year-old deleted files, we were amazed at how much was legible and usable. We tested this program on hard drives, floppy drives and even flash drives. Then we tested it on standard IDE/ATA/SCSI hard drives, and drives larger than 8 GB. Recover Lost Files didn't let us down.
What was most impressive however is that we didn't have to wait an hour for the program to scan everything. Other recovery programs can actually take that long before they start retrieving files. With Recover Lost Files, we were viewing year-old files within minutes. And each of our full, partial, and batch searches performed as promised -- obviously putting this program in its own class.
