Firewalls and Firewall Software - What You Need To Know
A firewall is software that acts as a buffer between your computer and the computers that connect to it. As a protection measure, firewalls attempt to control the data that's sent from- and to- the computer that it's installed on through a security system. And it's this security system that will either permit or deny a data request.
There are two types of firewall software and this article assumes that you're interested in the personal firewall rather than the conventional firewall. Unless your computer is part of a large network (like a university, bank, or hospital network), a conventional network isn't for you. Personal firewall software is more appropriate for home desktop computers like the one that you're probably using now.
How Firewall Software Works
Each time that we connect to the Internet, our computers send and receive data requests. It's this exchange that allows us to access websites, files, and email. The problem is that while we're on the Internet, we're vulnerable to data requests that we didn't ask for and if we're not protected, our computers may respond to those data requests and send information that we really need to keep private.
So firewall software works by prompting each data request for a security clearance code of sorts before complying. Without this clearance, the software will interpret a data request as an intrusion and then act appropriately. It may alert the user that an unknown source is requesting data and wait for a response to let it through, or it may simply block that request altogether. Some firewall software will inform its user about the source that's requesting the data.
The Firewall's Role In Protection
As you can see, firewall software plays an important role in protecting the information on our computers, and it's an essential tool for users who spend an extensive amount of time on the Internet. Casual Internet users generally don't need to install a firewall, but those who use a net-connected computer or computer that accesses an Intranet on a daily bases can benefit from firewall protection. This is especially important to the computer that has been infected by a virus. Since a virus or other similar malicious program will attempt to send information to an unknown source, a good firewall will stop its activities.
