In the past few years, PC security has grown into one of the most widely discussed subjects among computer professionals and the message is always the same: Strengthen PC Security. Any computer that’s connected to the Internet is exposed to any number of threats that unfortunately increase at a dangerous rate. But what’s equally disturbing is the number of networks that aren’t protected at all.

Thinking back about 10 years, we remember a fellow who developed virus software (not anti-virus software - a collection of real viruses themselves) as a testing tool. His intentions were completely honest, as his software helped anti-virus developers fine-tune their programs. And quite often his pool of critters evaded the scans of some of the better known developers — developers who of course, worked quite diligently to improve their products.

Facing the numerous security risks that we have today, you may wonder if ANYthing is safe any more! We certainly don’t blame you for thinking this way for at times, we wonder the same thing too. The thing is that by staying abreast of what’s going on in the PC security industry, we feel comfortable about the things we do because we’re armed with critical infomation. We wouldn’t be 100% truthful if we said that computer maintenance is an effortless feat. Sure, the software that we use doesn’t require any physical exertion on our part, but even we have to admit that it’s grunge work for just one computer. Just imagine if you were responsible for maintaining a network of a hundred computers or more!

Remember that silly rhyme we used to say as children? “Step on a crack, break your mother’s back!” (Where DID that silly thing come from anyway? Something tells us we don’t want to know.) Well stepping on cracks is inevitable if you’ve paid any attention to street quality, and since our mothers are still standing tall, we’re not talking about those kinds. Instead, we we’re talking about software cracks.
