Spam and Anti-Spam Software - What You Need To Know
There's a common saying in the Internet community and it says that if you're not getting spammed, you're just not online enough! Spam is so prevalent today that it's just impossible to interact online without getting an unsolicited message of some sort. Besides consuming up our time, spam can be dangerous to the people who don't know how to respond to it. This article will discuss some its issues and then suggest ways to combat it before it gets to that dangerous level.
What Is Spam?
Spam is an unsolicited message sent in bulk. The message can be an email message, message board post, blog post, search engine junk, or any other transmission of unwanted content that appears over and over. Over the short course of Internet history, spam has been redefined several times from the simple unwanted and unsolicited sales letter to the consistently repeated message of little significance to anyone. The major problem with spam is that it's unwanted no matter where it exists or where it's headed. But there are other problems as well.
The Dangers of Spam
Because 99.999% of spam messages are scams and hoaxes, those who fall prey to its pleas are likely to a) send their life savings to virtual thieves, b) install viruses onto their computers (which could inadvertently send more spam through an email address book), c) contribute to their own identity theft, or d) get caught up into some outrageously illegal activity. Spammers send out millions of emails in hopes of convincing just one naive person to hand over their most personal information and they're unfortunately pretty successful in doing so.
Combating Spam
The most important step in combating spam is to recognize it for what it is. Remember that spam is any unsolicited request for anything no matter how legitimate or sincere it may seem. This includes requests to respond to contest winnings, messages from long lost relatives, or million dollar deals from foreign representatives. Any request for your credit card, personal information, money, or customer business from a source that you did not previously contact is not only spam -- it's dangerous spam and you'll be the smarter for ignoring it.
Since there isn't much you can do about the spam that appears in search engines or Usenet newsgroups, you'll need to focus on keeping it out of your personal email box. Email is the number one tool used by most spammers and that's why you must download and install an anti-spam software program on your system today.
How Anti-Spam Software Works
Anti-Spam software works by first, searching your email for content and email domains that are associated with spam and then second, deleting spam messages. This filtering process can occur on your end -- after you've already downloaded your message into your email program, or it can occur on your ISP's server's end -- before you download your messages.
In the latter scenario, anti-spam software logs in to your mail server with your username and password and then filters out your real email from spam before it reaches your computer. In the former scenario, anti-spam software filters your messages while it's entering your Inbox.
Different users have their own preferences when it comes to handling spam, and it will be up to you to determine if you want to filter it from your email's Inbox or your ISP's mail server. Since virus attachments often accompany spam messages, we recommend that you filter it from your ISP's mail server with SpamBully, SpamWasher, or SpamWeed. These programs will prevent attachments from reaching your computer and thus minimize your chance of infection.
